Georgetown MBA Essay Tips 2023-2024

Please select one of the following three essays to complete (500 words max)

Essay Option 1

Describe a time when you’ve led a team in a professional environment to implement a new idea or process. What leadership characteristics did you utilize? What could you have done to be more effective? And most importantly, what skills will you be able to bring to the teams you lead at McDonough?

Essay Option 1 Tips

Georgetown McDonough business schools place a strong emphasis on leadership and seek to admit MBA students who can leverage their opportunities to further strengthen their leadership skills.

Often schools ask for a leadership story but Georgetown has gone a step ahead and kept a specific focus on implementing a new idea or process. This makes the essay different and a bit challenging! You will restrict your answer to that context.

When talking about your leadership characteristics and how you could have done better, you are expected to demonstrate a high level of self-awareness and humility.

Start your leadership story by giving the context of the situation and the associated challenges. Show your thought process and what actions you took to assemble and lead your team. As you give details of your work and process, keep the technical jargon to a minimum and write simply and authentically. If possible, take the reader with you on your mental and emotional journey. If you are writing a professional story, you could try requesting your recommenders to include it in the LOR to enhance credibility and impact.

The last part of the MBA essay needs to tie your past experience and skill set with your time at Georgetown. Some of the skills you could highlight are: people management, teamwork, interpersonal skills, communication skills, and cross-cultural leadership

Essay Option 2

Describe a time where you’ve put the needs of others ahead of your own or ahead of the bottom line. We look forward to learning more about the challenge you faced, what unique characteristics you brought to that scenario, and what you learned from it.

Essay Option 2 Tips

As stated in their description, Georgetown McDonough prides itself on embodying the ethos that people should contribute to the greater good. Through this MBA essay, the admissions committee seeks to understand how you’ve demonstrated these values, especially during challenging times.

What you decide to talk about here - will reveal your character, values, and maturity. So be judicious, introspective, and wisely portray your strengths

For this MBA essay, pick an example that is compelling, moving, and also presents you as a strong leader and potential MBA candidate. Giving specific, concrete details to your story will make your narrative vivid and memorable.

Since the main focus is on social good, make sure you clearly highlight what was the real impact of your actions.

Essay Option 3

Personal Brand: Think of a business leader or role model you admire or aspire to be. What are the defining characteristics of his or her personal brand that you see in yourself? Give an example of how you have been able to emulate these characteristics in your professional career and how your personal brand will enrich the McDonough community.

Essay Option 3 Tips

A interesting but complex question!

The biggest thing to remember here is that - even while talking about another person you admire, the essay must focus on YOU. In answering WHY you admire a person, you reveal your values and ideals, and character, and that is what Georgetown is interested in learning about you.

While you can pick anyone as your role model, even someone from your own family. If you select a known personality it would make your job easier. However, if you pick someone not as well known, then first give some details about who they are and why are they a good leader. But never waiver from keeping the main focus on yourself. You are applying for admission to Georgetown, not the leader you admire!

Also, remember that your purpose through every MBA essay and application component is to make a case for your admission. So treat this also as a marketing opportunity and have fun with it!

Essay Option 4

The Georgetown Community: Georgetown McDonough is a diverse, global community. We look to understand the contribution that your personal background would make to our community. As appropriate, you may wish to address any obstacles or challenges you have overcome; any educational, familial, cultural, economic, and social experiences that have helped to shape your educational and professional goals; or how your background (e.g. first-generation student, resident outside the U.S.) or activities (e.g. community service and leadership) will contribute to our community.

Essay Option 4 Tips

A recently added MBA essay option that we greatly welcome. Often an MBA applicant's candidacy is not fully captured by the achievements highlighted in the CV and letters of recommendation. So, it is important to understand the context of their achievements, and the struggles they have faced on their path to success. If you have faced challenges while growing up or overcame personal struggles -give them a voice here.

If you have gained unique life experiences due to your unique background, bring them here and describe how they have shaped you. These experiences could be related to family, schooling, or communities in which you grew up. These could also be about extracurricular activities or community work that have given you unique insight into human conditions.

At all times, be mindful to tie it together - in how you will contribute to Georgetown's community. And don't forget - through this MBA essay too you are being evaluated for your potential to be a successful MBA candidate!

(Hint: one minute goes fast! We already have your resume and goals – share something new!) Use this video as an opportunity to bring life to your application.
